Philipp Sarasin is emeritus professor of modern history at the University of Zurich and one of the foremost scholars of Michel Foucault in the German-speaking world. Among his many publications are Darwin und Foucault. Genealogie und Geschichte im Zeitalter der Biologie (Darwin and Foucault. Genealogy and History in the Age of Biology), and Michel Foucault zur Einführung (An Introduction to Michel Foucault), the influential standard introduction to Foucault’s thought in German. His most recent book is the widely read 1977. Eine kurze Geschichte der Gegenwart (1977. A Brief History of the Present), in which he traces the cultural, political, and technological upheavals that have shaped the recent past. This interview is centred around the enduring political actuality of Foucault’s thought and what his analytical tools can still offer us in making sense of the present.
